A bespoke new build family home

Undertaking a new build home project can feel daunting and somewhat overwhelming. With endless choices and possibilities available, knowing where to start and how to edit the options to create your dream home can be a real challenge.

We first met with our clients back in November 2019.  They had a builder, a kitchen designer, a selection of materials and some brilliant ideas but could not conceive how to pull it all together.  As a starting point, we considered how they pictured living in the space, how it would flow best, and all the practical elements required to make their everyday better. We wanted to ensure that we created an effective interior that functioned well whilst stylistically reflected our clients love of mixing the old with the more contemporary.  It was also key to reflect the family story and their passion for travel to create a joyful, bespoke family home.

Our first step was to work through the space planning and design the crucial, custom-made joinery.  We then partnered with a local lighting designer, A Splash of Light to ensure that we could create layers of lighting needed to produce the desired effect.  Only once we had these key components in place did we begin to consider the materials and finishes that would add the special touches to give a contemporary, refined and completely unique edge.  Our clients love the California mid-century aesthetic with a modern luxe twist and wanted to avoid a contrived, show home look.  They are optimistic and spirited in their outlook on life and hoped to reflect this in their new family home.

We soon created a pallet full of rich textures, earthy tones, and natural materials such as dark woods and distinctly textural stones paired with antique brassware and chunky textiles.  Working so closely with the contractor, Flaherty Builders, gave us the opportunity to create something very special. We commissioned a specialised black lime plaster finish on the staircase which beautifully highlighted the bespoke reeded glass chandelier.  The stone used in the vanity in the cloakroom was hand-picked from the mason’s yard, along with the dramatic stonework on the kitchen island.  All the personally selected finishing touches combined to create a visual feast.

Travelling together to Paris with our client, we sourced the most incredible lighting and furniture at the trade show Mason Objet. Our client has a real passion for scouting special vintage finds and featuring classic family pieces, combining the old and new together.  Following this principle, working collaboratively and closely with everyone involved, we were able to craft a stunning, bespoke family home filled with joy and character.
